Chirk Aqueduct was built by Thomas Telford in 1801 to take the Llangollen Canal over the River Ceiriog near the Welsh Border. In reality the piers are vertical and not splayed as they appear here. (From ‘Lives of the Engineers’ by Samuel Smiles, 1861-2)
