Anyone who admits to an interest in ‘folk customs’ will expect the next question to be ‘Oh, you mean morris dancing and things like that?’ Well, there is more to it but it cannot be denied that May Day brings morris dancers out in numbers, along with little girls in Laura Ashley dresses dancing around maypoles. We all like May Day, the beginning of summer. However May Day is also International Workers’ Day and thus anathema to right wing governments, who make intermittent attempts to suppress it.
