To many the terms ‘Green Man’ and ‘Jack-in-the-Green’ are interchangeable, especially the painters of inn signs. The two must be related, featuring leaves and shoots perhaps symbolising growth and rebirth, but the pair are quite different because Jack is a being who lives and moves and a Green Man is represented in stone or wood, stained glass or maybe in an illuminated manuscript.
